MAXIMAL GOOD,
MINIMAL BAD

All the good stuff, like flying around the world, has a price, paid by the bad stuff, like greenhouse gases. Not even Sens is 100% good. No one is. We try to do maximal good while minimizing the bad. For us, however, working on the “good” is not just a marketing trick.

MAXIMAL GOOD,
MINIMAL BAD

The farm
of the future

The United Nations published a scientific report in 2013 about a possible aid to our unsustainable meat protein production - cricket protein. For years, nobody cared. There were no cricket protein products on the shelves at supermarkets. We took the challenge, and decided to be the leaders in this systemic change.

Sustainability and minimal harm

Beyond carbon offsetting or claiming a paper bag as “environment saving”. For us, sustainability means changing the systems.

Changing the way we eat

1 - Protein production
Our R&D team is making cricket protein production more efficient. Over 80 years of research in chicken farming made this meat really cheap. In contrast, there is almost no research in large scale cricket farming. However, the logic of using less natural resources works. With future improvements, we can make this sustainable protein also the cheapest.

2 - Everyday foods
Whether protein bar or pasta, the products look great and taste delicious. What started as a small Kickstarter campaign in 2016 has lead us to promoting the cricket protein idea to millions. Sens products are the best propaganda of this sustainable protein.

Why first farm
in Thailand

Same as chocolate, dates or peanuts, the cricket protein in our bars is not produced in Europe.
However, this is just the intermediate phase. We see our farm as a pilot farm where we can research and optimize the production. When the demand for cricket protein rises, we envision efficient, automated cricket farms located in the suburbs of every big city, true farm-to-table style.
We chose Thailand because of the people’s extensive cricket farming know-how. We collaborate with local universities and hire those experienced in cricket farming. The country’s hot weather is also ideal for farming.

What are we
still improving

To be honest, we are still improving a ton of stuff! We are a small company and we can’t afford to pick many fights. Besides being late on our weekly update meetings and our occasional junk food binging, we want to come clean with a few things we would love to do better.
For example, there is currently no solution to compostable packaging. With the available compostable foils, our protein bars would get rock dry in two months and our dry crackers would slowly absorb moisture and lose their “crunch”. Being unable to develop our own packaging, we choose to preserve food and leave it up to you to recycle the plastic and paper wraps. Once we find a working solution, we will implement it.

Thailand was chosen for extensive knowhow that was already in cricket farming. We collaborate with local universities and hire people experienced in cricket farming. The hot weather is also ideal for farming.
